A car inspection report is a written record of a used car's condition, checked by a technician before you buy. It covers the body, engine, gearbox, brakes, tyres, electrics and the car's history, and marks each item as fine, worth watching or a problem. Read it before you agree a price, not after.
What a pre-purchase inspection report covers
- Body and paint: panel gaps, repainted panels, filler and signs of accident repair
- Engine: leaks, warning lights, noises, belts, fluids and stored fault codes
- Gearbox and drivetrain: shifting, clutch or transmission behaviour on a test drive
- Brakes, suspension and steering: wear, play and noises
- Tyres: tread depth, uneven wear and manufacture date
- Electrics and comfort: air conditioning, windows, lights, screens and sensors
- Interior: seats, airbags, flood signs and wear that doesn't match the mileage
- Documents: chassis (VIN) number matched to the registration card, service history if available
How to read the results
Most reports sort findings into three groups. Items that passed need nothing. Advisories are wear items that will need money soon, such as brake pads or tyres; use them to negotiate. Failures are faults that affect safety or cost serious money, such as a leaking gearbox, chassis damage or airbag warnings; ask the seller to fix them first or walk away.
Findings that should change your offer
- Repainted or replaced panels the seller didn't mention
- Mileage that doesn't fit the wear on the pedals, seats and steering wheel
- Stored engine or gearbox fault codes, even with no warning light on
- Uneven tyre wear, which can point to alignment or suspension damage
- Missing service history on a car that is meant to be agency-serviced
- A chassis number that doesn't match the registration card: stop the deal

The RTA test ("passing") checks that a car is safe and legal to register. A pre-purchase inspection checks whether the car is worth the price. A car can pass the RTA test and still need thousands of dirhams of work, so buyers use both.
